Kenyan airstrikes kill 60 in Somalia
More than 60 people have been killed after
Kenyan warplanes bombarded southern Somalia,
a Kenyan military spokesman has announced.
The airstrikes happened in Garbaharey town on
Friday, Col. Cyrus Oguna said Saturday.
He claimed that 60 al-Shabab fighters were killed
and about 50 others were injured in the airstrikes.
Last October, Kenya sent soldiers over its border
into Somalia to pursue al-Shabab.
The Kenyan military claims to have killed
hundreds of Somali fighters, but eyewitnesses
said civilians are the victims of the airstrikes.
Kenyan troops are currently fighting al-Shabab in
Somalia's south.
Somalia has not had a functioning government
since 1991, when warlords overthrew former
dictator Mohamed Siad Barre.
